U.S. Open: Groundhog runs past Phil Mickelson on fairway

ARDMORE, Pa. — Considering Phil Mickelson's tendency to place second at the U.S. Open, the last thing he probably wants to see is history repeating itself. And yet Friday afternoon somehow turned into Groundhog Day when an actual groundhog ran across the sixth fairway of Merion Golf Club, entertaining the crowd that was following Mickelson and his two playing partners, Keegan Bradley and Steve Stricker.

Punxsutawney, Pa. is almost 300 miles away from the Phiadelphia area, so it's doubtful this adventurous little fella knows Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous groundhog in the world.

He did have other groundhog company, though, as NBC cameras showed two groundhogs munching on Merion Golf Club's lush rough about an hour before his big dash.

Can Bill Murray be far behind?
